About Mike

As a former member of the US Freestyle Ski Team for moguls (1987-88), Mike’s career also includes featuring in over a dozen ski films with legendary filmmakers like Greg Stump and Warren Miller, including the iconic Blizzard of Aahhhs. In addition to his on-snow accomplishments, Mike has played a pivotal role in brand building and product development for major ski companies such as K2, Fischer, and Black Diamond, specializing in both alpine and backcountry markets.

He's called Sun Valley home for over 30 years and currently serves as the Director of Skiing for Eleven Experience, where he continues to fuse his passion for skiing with leadership and innovation in the industry.

"From Red Square to White Peaks"

This slideshow blends classic ski imagery with the adventure of traveling to the land of fire and ice.

It begins in Moscow, exploring Red Square and the Kremlin—places I wouldn’t dream of visiting today. Even in 2018, the trip felt straight out of a spy novel. Just weeks before my departure, a former Russian military officer turned British double agent was poisoned in England with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent—an event that led to all U.S. diplomats being expelled from Russia.

It ends with some of the best—and worst—skiing of my life in some of the most breathtaking terrain I’ve ever seen.

Growing up in Seattle, I was used to skiing volcanoes—Rainier, Hood, Adams, St. Helens, Shasta, Lassen—but nothing prepared me for Kamchatka. The peninsula contains more than a third of all volcanoes on the Pacific Rim, is home to Russia’s largest geothermal plant, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
