Angela Hawse put on an unforgettable Winter Speaker Series show, presented by the North Tahoe Chamber, through which she shared her experience as a pioneering female IFMGA mountain guide. Her story touched on how she got there, what it's like to be one of few women in a male dominated industry, what her profession is like, and of course, many of the incredible expeditions she has been on in what was both an inspiring tribute to the incredible places on this earth, and people that inhabit it, as well as a blueprint for the next generation of guides.
She then passed on the torch to our community reminding us that it was most likely people in this room (or livestream) who will carry on the progress that she has worked with many other women to champion! Challenge accepted! We are grateful to have learned from Angela and are excited to follow her footsteps in welcoming everyone to the table and pushing the boundaries in whatever we pursue.
As her presentation went on, it became clear that her profession and lifestyle are deeply integrated — from her gratitude for the adventures she gets to go on and the people she meets along the way, to her ability to weave in the things that are important to her such as fundraising opportunities, picking up trash, and reducing her carbon footprint, to her inclusion of many passion projects that incrementally move her goals forward. Her determination to make her career deeply align with who she is as a person is something we can all aspire to!
The evening benefitted Headwaters Science Institute in a BIG way! Between the bar and giveaway sales (all in-person funds raised will be matched thanks to the generosity of the Tahoe Fund!), and anonymous donations from the Donor Party, our community raised north of $90,000 for this organization. Their work to foster curiosity in children through hands-on learning, connecting with the environment, and engaging in asking questions is something we are honored to support.
