Osprey Sopris Pro 30: The Airbag Pack Designed for Women

Why Use an Airbag?

When it comes to backcountry skiing, the stakes are high, and gear choices are never taken lightly. I remember when I first started thinking seriously about avalanche safety gear—it wasn’t just about buying something that worked; it was about having the gear that would give me peace of mind. Without trying the gear first, I purchased an airbag that seemed confidence-inspiring but now I never use it because it just doesn't fit. I wish I had discovered the Osprey Soelden Pro and Sopris Pro Airbags. These packs aren’t just airbags; They’re thoughtful, well-engineered solutions for those long, unpredictable days in the backcountry.

As a man, I favor the Soelden pack. As an advocate for women-specific design in the ski industry, it is such a pleasure to introduce the Sopris Pro 30. Designed specifically for women, this avalanche pack is built for those who demand both performance and safety in the backcountry.

The Sopris Pro 30 is an evolution of the already outstanding Sopris line of female backcountry packs, now featuring the next-gen Alpride E2 Airbag System. This system delivers improved performance in a more compact and lighter package, ensuring you're ready for whatever the backcountry throws your way. Whether you’re skinning into remote locations or taking a heli drop, this pack is designed to provide a secure fit that enhances movement and comfort—especially for women who often find other packs less tailored to their body shape. With its superior fit and backcountry-specific features, the Sopris Pro 30 helps you move with confidence on the most technical descents.

A Fit That’s Designed for Women

Not all packs are created equal, especially when it comes to women’s specific needs in the backcountry. The Sopris Pro 30 stands out because it’s designed specifically for women —from its fit to its features. Osprey’s attention to detail in gender-specific sizing means that this pack contacts your body in all the right places, allowing for a stable carry, comfortable fit, and efficient movement through rugged terrain.

To be specific, it is “torso length” that makes the biggest difference in overall backpack fit. While most backpacks are sized for the average male torso length, about 19,” the Sopris Pro is designed for torso lengths from 14” to 19.” Thanks to this improvement, the pack is available in one size that is optimized for most women.

The harness is made from contoured die cut EVA foam for a cushioned and comfortable fit. Unlike other packs that sometimes feel bulky or off-balance, the Sopris Pro 30 uses a 3.5mm steel frame which reduces overall fatigue when carrying a heavy pack all day. Plus, with the built-in Alpride E2 airbag system, you’re getting a system that is 40% smaller and 4.9 oz. lighter than the old E1 system.

Durable and Backcountry-ready

Backcountry terrain is often abrasive, so you need a pack that can handle whatever comes your way. The Sopris Pro E2 is built with bluesign® approved recycled fabrics that provide durability while also reducing environmental impact. The NanoFly fabric uses ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), creating an incredibly light fabric with remarkable abrasion resistance. Whether you're battling dense trees, rocky ridgelines, or scrabbling up a steep ascent, this pack can take the abuse.

But durability isn’t just about strength—it’s also about performance in varying conditions. The Sopris Pro E2 features a snow-shed backpanel designed to prevent snow from clumping on the pack. This feature ensures your gear stays dry, light, and ready to go, even in the deepest powder.

An Airbag System You Can Count On

The Alpride E2 Airbag System is what sets this pack apart from others in its class. Powered by a rechargeable fan , rather than a traditional CO2 cartridge, it offers a more eco-friendly and practical solution for avalanche protection. What I love about the E2 system is how lightweight and compact it is, offering the same life-saving protection without weighing you down.

Deploying the airbag is quick and easy, and the handle is easy to grab—even with gloves on. When inflated, the E2 airbag balloon is now 12 liters larger for maximum flotation, helping you stay on top of the snow. This system gives you the peace of mind to ski more confidently, knowing that you're equipped with one of the best airbag systems available.

About Volume

Volume is the next consideration when it comes to a backpack for technical ski mountaineering. You need enough space for layers, food and water, ice tools, crampons, and other essentials. This pack actually measures 32 liters but is advertised as 30, as the airbag system takes up volume in the main compartment. We are extremely happy with a 30 liter pack as the carrying capacity is unlikely to hinder you even on the most ambitious objectives. I'd only consider bumping up in volume if you intend to camp overnight on multi-day tours, where you'd benefit from 50 liters or more.

Features That Make a Difference

The Sopris Pro 30 is packed with features that enhance both functionality and safety, all while maintaining a sleek design. It’s got everything you need to stay organized, comfortable, and safe on the mountain:

  • Front Panel J-Zip Access to an avalanche safety gear pocket with shovel handle and probe sleeves—no more fumbling around for gear when seconds count.

  • Radio Carry with mic attachment points directly on the harness, so you can stay in touch with your group.

  • A-frame or Diagonal Ski Carry and Vertical Front Panel Snowboard Carry, offering flexible options for attaching your gear.

  • Dual Position Helmet Carry (front or top of pack) to keep your helmet secure and accessible.

  • Secure Ice Tool Carry Sleeve for your ice tools, making it easy to tackle mixed terrain.

  • Large U-Zip Access to the main compartment and Internal Zippered Organization Pocket for keeping everything in its place.

  • Single-Zippered Hipbelt Pocket and Gear Loop for quick-access items like snacks and mountaineering gear.
