Start with a Breathable Top
Yes! The foundation of a cold-weather running kit is a breathable top. A performance layer next-to-skin will keep your additional layers from bogging you down. The RaceTech shirt is warmer than the Thermal Dispersion Tee. Choose Bless Up Trail if you like to party.
M Airshed Pro PO
"Your next layer is one of the best pieces ever made. A hybrid construction featuring breathable fabric at the arms and hood (ultralight capilene) and a wind blocker for your core (airshed material). I've never found a long-sleeve top that I can move so freely in, without overheating or freezing out."

Choose your Shell
You really can't beat the Houdini for a layering piece that disappears into your pack or belt. Until Raide Research did. The TrailTech UL Shell Anorak is less than 50 grams heavier and packs a full waterproof membrane.
M TrailTech UL Shell Anorak
"The TrailTech UL Shell Anorak is an emergency shell light enough that you'll never leave it at home again. Especially because it packs down small enough to live in your belt. The 3-layer fabric delivers full waterproof-breathable performance. At 150g, it’s the lightest 3-layer shell available."

The Surprising Choice
I'm choosing the TrailTech shorts even on the coldest of days. That's because I'm carrying more gear on cold days and the TrailTech short carries better than the rest of them. Paired with a belt, I have room for flasks, nutrition, and layers without needing a vest.
Use a Belt
Our goal is to run hard in cold weather without a vest. A vest is going to swamp your upper body layers and complicate layer changes. Choose LF 2L for the least bounce and most storage.
Wool Running Socks
Choose Darn Tough for a higher wool percentage and narrower fit. The Ridge Runner is zero cushion and the Pacer is ultra-light weight and cushioned. The Falke RU5 has a wider toe box and a performance blend.
The Equipment Kit
If your ambitions are bold enough, you'll need this gear. Wade into vest territory so that you can carry more food, more water, and store your poles effortlessly. The BD x norda Collection is designed for big mountain adventures using durable, waterproof materials.
BD X norda M 000
"What do we do when the weather rolls in? We choose a waterproof shoe that's built for the biggest terrain. The Dyneema construction allows for more weather resistance in the upper while the deep lugs and durable foam don't give up easy. The ultimate shoulder season adventure shoe."
