About Clean Up the Lake

Clean Up the Lake (CUTL) is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to activate local communities to join us in taking action to protect the environment, both above and below the surface. Our efforts include working with engaged community volunteers to remove submerged litter from natural waterways and monitor for aquatic invasive species (AIS) to improve water quality and ecosystem health while also educating the public on how litter accumulates, and AIS can be transported in the environment in unforeseen ways. To date our SCUBA cleanups have removed over 70,000 pounds of litter from lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains and we have worked to engage over 1,200 students in the Tahoe area, through our Litter Education Awareness Program (LEAP) to educate them on the issues of litter in the environment and empower them to take preventative action.

Tools for Grassroots Activists by Nora Gallagher and Lisa Myers

I chose Tools for Grassroots Activists because I have a serious appetite for learning and self-improvement. Fictional literature has never held my interest; rather, I gravitate towards books that enrich my understanding and leave me feeling empowered to make a difference in the world. My pursuit of knowledge is driven by a desire to enhance not only my personal success, but also to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of our local environment here in Lake Tahoe.

The Climate Book by Greta Thunberg

I've always been someone who wants to preach our own individual power to 'Make A Difference' in the world today. So many people that I've met in my life say that as one single person, they feel like their actions do not matter - that in a world of 7.9 billion people what possible impact could their individual choices have for better or for worse. Greta Thunberg has been an inspiration to me, as someone who firmly believes that she can make a difference and in doing so has created a global movement in her wake. Whether it's a deep reading or skimming of her presentation of how she addresses climate change in this book, there is something for everyone to take away from this author.

The Future of the Responsible Company by Vincent Stanley and Yvon Chouinard

The primary reason I chose this book was to take personal accountability as a first step toward holding my company accountable. No individual, not even AI, can claim to know everything. As our organization has grown quickly in recent years, I have a desire to grow with it and learn whatever I can to help me run a better company and organization. By continuously seeking improvement, I can implement newfound insights at Clean Up The Lake to enhance our operations, reduce our environmental footprint, and strengthen our relationships with staff and the community.
