Coming Soon: Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody

Arc'teryx is known for producing some of the most reliable, high-performance outdoor gear on the market. Their Gamma Lightweight Hoody, a softshell jacket designed for a variety of outdoor pursuits, stands out as an excellent piece for active adventurers who need protection without the bulk. With a focus on versatility, comfort, and durability, the Gamma Lightweight Hoody is designed for hiking, but Alpenglow Sports is declaring something else: This is among the best softshell jackets for backcountry skiing.

Somewhat by accident, Arc’teryx assembled a softshell fabric, fit, and feature set that gives us everything we need for the backcountry skiing, and nothing we don't. We were all sceptical when a bunch of next-years hiking jackets showed up and Brendan told us the plan: We were to test these all season and try to make the call if we should we stock this as a ski jacket or not? After a great early season with lots of different weather and every type of backcountry adventure you could imagine, we’re going for it.

Next winter, Alpenglow Sports will stock the Arc’teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody alongside purpose-built ski jackets and we expect to perform among the best. Will you join us in our hiking gear in the dead of winter? Find out if this jacket is right for you in our extended review below.

Product Overview & Features

The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody is crafted from Fortius™ 1.0, a softshell fabric that strikes a balance between durability, breathability, and stretch. This lightweight yet durable fabric provides excellent mobility for activities like climbing, hiking, and skiing. The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish adds a layer of resistance against light rain and moisture, though the hoody is not fully waterproof. The jacket’s softshell construction allows it to handle wind and light precipitation without compromising breathability.

The hoody also features Articulated patterning, which enhances freedom of movement making it a great companion for those who need weather protection without compromising fit.

Additionally, the Gamma Lightweight Hoody includes a variety of practical features:

  • Two hand pockets with zippers, providing space for essentials like a phone, keys, or snacks.

  • A zippered chest pocket for easy access to smaller items like a map or compass.

  • Elastic cuffs to keep cold drafts at bay.

  • Helmet-compatible hood fits snugly over a helmet

Fit & Comfort

The fit of the Gamma Lightweight Hoody is designed with active movement in mind. Arc'teryx describes the fit as trim, but the fit is a significant departure from other Arc’teryx pieces. It’s way more relaxed and boxy than you might expect! They struck a balance between getting a modern look without adding excessive bulk. This means the hoody won’t get in the way of your gear or restrict your mobility.

The fabric's stretch is another significant advantage. Fortius™ 1.0 fabric allows for a considerable amount of stretch, making the hoody a comfortable choice for strenuous activities. The Articulation of the elbows and shoulders further enhances flexibility, allowing the jacket to move with you during demanding climbs.

In terms of comfort, the internal lining feels smooth against the skin, and the material wicks away moisture to help you feel dry when you break a sweat. While it’s lightweight, the hoody still provides enough warmth in cool conditions, especially when worn over a baselayer.

Durability & Performance

The durability of the Gamma Lightweight Hoody is one of its strongest suits. Arc'teryx is known for building products that last, and this jacket is no exception. The Fortius™ 1.0 fabric, though light, is surprisingly tough and resistant to abrasion. This makes it a great option for backcountry skiing where brushes with rocks, trees, and branches are common.

While the hoody won’t stand up to snowfall like three-layer Gore, it performs well in dry snow and light rain, keeping you dry during unpredictable weather changes. The wind resistance is another notable feature. It can block out chilly winds without feeling stuffy or overheated, which is a key consideration for those who spend a lot of time in windy, exposed areas like ridgelines or alpine environments.

Breathability & Versatility

The Gamma Lightweight Hoody is an incredibly versatile jacket. It balances a high-degree of breathability with the weather-resistance we need for backcountry skiing. We estimate the jacket to breath at about 20 CFM, an impressive level suited to high-intensity activities. A high CFM keeps you cool and allows sweat to evaporate, which is essential when you're exerting yourself. We carry more breathable jackets but believe the added versatility of the Gamma Lightweight Hoody makes it a standout in the category.

Comparison & Alternatives

The Gamma MX Hoody is a heavier, warmer version of this jacket, so if you're looking for something with more warmth, that would be the logical step up. However, for most backcountry skiers, the Gamma Lightweight Hoody offers the ideal balance of weather protection and breathability without the added bulk.

A more breathable option would be the Rab Borealis. The Borealis consistently ranks as our most breathable jacket and has an exceptionally paired-down feature set that I really enjoy.

Sustainability & Ethical Considerations

Arc'teryx has made strides in sustainability, particularly with its recycled fabrics and eco-friendly production processes. Though the Gamma Lightweight Hoody doesn’t have the same high level of sustainability features as some of their newer collections, it’s built to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Additionally, the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the fabric is PFAS-free, a step toward reducing harmful chemicals in outdoor gear.

Testing Results & Experience

Having personally tested the Gamma Lightweight Hoody most of the 24/25 Winter season, I can confidently say it exceeds its reputation. For a jacket designed for hiking, the Gamma Lightweight Hoody excelled as my daily companion in the skintrack. I found myself choosing it on storm days or colder days where I would benefit from its increased weather protection.

The jacket's fit and features were also key factors in keeping this jacket at the front of my rotation. The fit was boxy but not baggy, which plays well as a snowboarder! I appreciate the elastic cuffs compared to velcro which always needs adjusting. My favorite feature, however, was the hood, which offered a loose fit over my hat and a snug fit over my helmet. I found that washing and care was easy and I was always able to bring back the DWR when it needed replenishing.

Final Thoughts

The Arc'teryx Gamma Lightweight Hoody is a standout product for outdoor enthusiasts who need a versatile, breathable, and durable jacket for backcountry skiing. This hoody delivers high-performance in a lightweight package with a dialed fit. While it’s on the pricier side, its durability and multi-season functionality make it a worthy investment for anyone who takes their outdoor adventures seriously.
