Alpenglow Sports is an original California Mountain Shop that has been providing locals and visitors with inspiration, local knowledge and the best gear to enjoy the great outdoors since 1973. Based in Tahoe City, we take pride in being community, socially and environmentally responsible to ensure Lake Tahoe stays one of the best places to play, visit, and live in California.
Roots in Outdoor Gear
Alpenglow Sports sells premium gear for all four seasons. We focus on human-powered backcountry exploration and quality above all else. Our selection of skiing, splitboarding, climbing, backpacking, and running gear is curated for adventures of all sizes. Athletes and community members need nutrition, clothing, inspiration, and equipment which we are thrilled to provide to our Tahoe City and Truckee communities.

Come to a Winter Speaker Series to hear amazing stories and connect with likeminded community. Everything we do connects our customers to community and knowledge that you can use to engage deeply with your outdoor pursuits. Alpenglow Sports raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local non-profits through our Donor Party.

We do not exist to sell you gear. Alpenglow Sports serves the community first by fostering a friendly atmosphere in the shop and hosting philanthropic community events. In a sea of uniformity and big box business ethics, we believe in environmental and social responsibility. More than a specialty retailer, we take pride in being a connected and invested community resource for all things North Lake Tahoe.
There was a time when almost nobody skiied the backcountry in Tahoe. Alpenglow Sports brought gear, expertise, and free education to the Tahoe community, creating the strong backcountry culture we enjoy today. Alpenglow Sports is still breaking trail on the West Shore and beyond. We'll see you out there.
Ski & Splitboard GearNordic Skiing wasn't easily accessible in the 70s and 80s. Alpenglow Sports starting flying in experts from Scandinavia to teach us about their new gliding and striding sports. We quickly became a hub for the discipline and continue to be the local leader in classic, skate, and metal-edge touring.
You can find the Alpenglow Staff skating fresh cord most mornings. The Alpenglow 10/20K Freestyle is the premier nordic race in the area.
Cross Country ski gear
When Dave Nettle joined Alpenglow Sports in 1985, climbing was still a tiny, counter-culture sport existing on the fringes. Dave unified the Alpenglow team around climbing as the next big thing. Our staff started to establish routes all through the Sierra and did so with cutting edge gear and new techniques.
Today, Alpenglow Sports honors that heritage with a commitment to climbing gear, climbing culture, and staff that send! Come by with your climbing questions!
Running experienced its largest period of growth in the 1980s. The staff at Alpenglow sports rode that wave, becoming marathoners and ultramarathoners while supporting the growing running community in Tahoe City and Truckee.
Running shoes were rapidly advancing and Alpenglow Sports was the first to stock new technologies as they became available. Today, Alpenglow Sports is dedicated to trail running and remains the only speciality run shop in the area. Our footwear buyer admits to having, "a bit of a sneaker problem," which means that Alpenglow Sports stocks an incredible selection of the highest-performance running shoes on the market.
The High Sierra is one of the best playgrounds for hikers and backpackers. Amazing wilderness areas in our backyard have us loading up packs and the endless trails inspire us to go lighter and further.
We love to chat base weight and are always helping folks optimize their ultralight backpacking setups. You don't need to go far to enjoy our surroundings. We stock hiking boots and gear for day hikes big and small.
Mountaineering adventures range from a side-country jaunt at your local ski hill to pioneering routes on 8,000 meter peaks. Fortunately, we have done it all and have the gear to support your ambitions.
Start with a set of automatic crampons and an ice axe and you'll already feel like a superhero. Come into the shop and well help you build the rest of your kit.
