About the Book:

ISBN: 9781493022618

In 1941, the author and six other fellow prisoners escaped a Soviet labor camp in Yakutsk--a camp where enduring hunger, cold, untended wounds, untreated illnesses, and avoiding daily executions were everyday feats. Their march--over thousands of miles by foot--out of Siberia, through China, the Gobi Desert, Tibet, and over the Himalayas to British India is a remarkable statement about man's desire to be free.

While the original book sold hundreds of thousands of copies, this updated paperback version includes a new Afterword by the author, as well as the author's Foreword to the Polish book. Written in a hauntingly detailed, no holds barred way, the new edition of The Long Walk is destined to outrank its classic status and guaranteed to forever stay in the reader's mind.

About Dave Nettle:

Dave Nettle is a Tahoe local backcountry ski and rock climbing guide at Alpenglow Expeditions in Olympic Valley. His passion for climbing, backcountry skiing and adventure travel has led him to many of the most spectacular mountain ranges and beautiful cultures of the world. Over the past five decades his high mountain climbing expeditions have included many, many days tent bound and waiting out storms which he considers to be, "excellent opportunities to expand one's literary reading horizons...".

When I think of the word "resilient" I imagine bouncing back and recovering from both physical and mental challenges, and not just to recover, but to grow and gain character from the adversity you encounter.

Why Dave Chose This Book:

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz tells of an incredibly inspiring and disturbing tale about a small group of Russians who have been sent to a very harsh Siberian work camp for so-called crimes against the state and are, from a historical and statistical point of view, goners. In this moving and true narrative, they work the system enough to gain the materials, inside help, confidence and belief that they can escape against the odds...and do. Then the real story begins. Their escape works because of their resilience in the face of multiple setbacks, but also because they choose to take a path that no Russian guards would ever expect...they trek south across the entire remote Asian continent over four thousand miles on foot to India and the hope of freedom. Their spirit and determination resonated with me, and for me, makes this a must read tale of resilience in the face of ongoing and relentless adversity; very timely with current world events that are unfolding around us.
