About the Book:

Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Hurricane’s Eye, Pulitzer Prize finalist Mayflower, and Valiant Ambition, is a historian with a unique ability to bring history to life. The Last Stand is Philbrick’s monumental reappraisal of the epochal clash at the Little Bighorn in 1876 that gave birth to the legend of Custer’s Last Stand. Bringing a wealth of new information to his subject, as well as his characteristic literary flair, Philbrick details the collision between two American icons- George Armstrong Custer and Sitting Bull-that both parties wished to avoid, and brilliantly explains how the battle that ensued has been shaped and reshaped by national myth.

About Annie Ballard:

Avid Outdoorsperson & Community Activist:

"I think we are in an exciting moment in history--a time when the ongoing effects of things like industrialization, colonialism, racism and capitalism are being openly and constructively discussed. We should seize on this moment and encourage dialogue as much as possible, for the betterment of the beautiful world around us, our fellow humans, and the animals with whom we share this planet."

Why Annie Chose This Book:

I was drawn to this book because I really loved Philbrick's "In the Heart of the Sea," and "Mayflower". I was not disappointed, as in this case he gave me a gripping and well-researched account of the events surrounding the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the greater tragedy of this chapter in our indigenous peoples' history. For those who want to continue to revise and broaden our societal perspectives on systemic racism and American colonialism, The Last Stand may not be the final word on its subject matter, but it's a great stepping stone and provides a lot of talking points.
